Although not always comfortable, change is good
A day older, a day wiser. As 2024 drew the breaths of its final sets to make way for a new year, we also found ourselves wondering what KCF was, what we stand for and more importantly, who we want to be for 2025. Although we had long embraced CrossFit, even at the beginning of 2024 we knew we wanted to be something different. Our mission has always been to provide a safe space for anyone and everyone to find health improvements. Living a long, comfortable and healthy life together is why we do it. So a change was in order, and Kanehsatake Community Fitness is that change.
Who we were : Kanehsatake CrossFit
Established in 2017 as a CrossFit gym, Kanehsatake CrossFit represented access to underserved communities. In the heart of the Mohawk lands of Kanehsatake, the gym lives in a picturesque setting, surrounded by nature. When we decided to go the CrossFit way, it was a representation of what we wanted philosophically. A fitness type sport where each individual could strive for their own success, accompanied by like-minded peers. In this aspect, nothing has changed. The change we wanted is represented by the change in our logo. The heavy weight of an Olympic Barbell not exactly being the most accessible…
Who we are : Kanehsatake Community Fitness
So why the kettlebell instead ? There’s 2 reasons, the first one is accessibility. Kettlebells truly are for absolutely any level of fitness. We use them to promote range of motion, dynamic movements and because they’re well suited to full-body workouts. And honestly, they’re plain and simply fun to use during workouts. This is what Kanehsatake Community Fitness is all about. Our gym is meant to make your fitness journey fun and accessible, whoever you may be and at whichever point of that journey you might be.
The other reason is a reminder of our past. In March of 2019, two years after the inception of the gym, it was burned down in a case of arson. Just like that, everything we had worked to build was gone, completely destroyed… Except one thing. A single kettlebell. The community truly rallied around us then and with all that support, we were able to rebuild. That’s why we feature it on our logo, to remember the strength of a community.
